How two people with different workplaces decide where to live. The compromise usually ends with one person absorbing all the pain — here's how to settle it with a map and numbers instead.

The thing couples argue about most when moving in together isn't rent or layout. It's which area.
The reason is straightforward: you work in different places. Move closer to one person's office and the other's commute stretches. And in practice, that split usually isn't decided by discussion — it's decided by whoever gives in first. Then it plays out every single morning.
This isn't really an emotional problem. It's a map problem, and map problems have numbers.
The classic mistake: "let's meet in the middle"
Say A works in Shinjuku and B works in Shinagawa.
The obvious move is "somewhere in between — Shibuya or Ebisu". This is frequently the worst available option:
- Rent is higher than near either workplace (it's prime central Tokyo)
- Both of you may lose your direct, no-transfer route
- Total commute time barely improves
Geographic midpoint ≠ commute midpoint. What matters is transfers and actual travel time, not straight-line distance. Judge by how the map looks and you'll walk straight into this.
The process
Step 1: List every non-negotiable place
Not just workplaces. What actually constrains daily life:
- Each person's office (or nearest station)
- Gyms, classes, regular commitments
- One set of parents, if you visit often
- Shared destinations — the supermarket you both use, a clinic
Cap it at five. Beyond that the constraints contradict each other and no solution exists.
Step 2: Put them all on the map at once

What you're looking for isn't "the middle" — it's where the markers cluster. That location is usually not the in-between station you first thought of.
Step 3: Build three candidates and compare them by URL
This is the important part. Don't narrow to one. Make three.
- Option A: closer to A's office
- Option B: closer to B's office
- Option C: wherever the markers actually cluster

Then send the URLs to your partner. Talking about "somewhere around X" is far slower than both of you looking at the same map. It also makes it immediately obvious whether one person is absorbing all the compromise.
Step 4: Check the real commute times
Once you have three candidates, measure each one in a transit app. Not map distance — actual travel time and transfer count. Put it in a table.

Laid out like this, you start to see things like identical total time at different rent levels.
The more useful metric is the gap, not the total. In the example, A and B both mean "one person eats 25–30 minutes"; option C means "both eat five minutes each". Over years, the second structure generates far less resentment.
